Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis is characterized by an inflammatory colitis affecting the colon or large intestine. The main symptoms of active disease usually include diarrhea, rectal bleeding and abdominal cramping.
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic (lifelong) disease with periods of remission (characterized by the absence of symptoms) and periods of acute flare (active symptoms). Although the symptoms can sometimes diminish spontaneously, the disease usually requires treatment in order to achieve and maintain clinical remission.
